Biography

Andy Mills graduated from The University of Sheffield in Control Engineering with sponsorship from the UK Government´s Engineering and Science Group and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has worked in industry on aerospace and automotive applications before his current post within the University Technology Centre supported by Rolls-Royce. Here, he is investigating a broad range of topics related to Health Management Technologies, including signal processing algorithms, instrumentation, advanced processing technologies and model based EHM system design.

Research Interests and Capabilities

Research undertaken exposes the benefit of advanced Health Monitoring through in-house development, demonstration and analysis of new technologies. Technologies explored include advances in analytical algorithms, sensors, data acquisition and data infrastructure. The research utilises a mix of fault models, historic data and expert knowledge to develop and assess the developed technologies.

EHM System Design – Systems modelling, knowledge elicitation, software tool development, data management, multivariate data analysis

Prognosis – Uncertainty modelling, fault modelling, probabilistic forecasting

Diagnostics – Algorithm design (time-frequency techniques) and algorithm deployment (model-based design for signal processing platforms - FPGAs, DSPs and multi-core processors)

EHM-Control Synergy – Gas Turbine Control strategies (existing and novel), performance degradation recovery, life extending control.
