We are one of the top research centres in the world, and the largest academic research centre in the UK, devoted to control and systems engineering.
Recognition of excellence
The outstanding international reputation of our research was recognised in the UK Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE2008).

In 2011, the total number of full-time research workers totalled around 115, made up of some 40 staff members and 75 PhD research students. Over the last decade, around 100 PhD students have graduated from the department, together with over 600 MSc students.
Research groups and centres
Much of our research is multi-disciplinary and results in partnerships with national and international institutions (both academic and industrial), and extensive collaboration with other departments in the University.
Our research is organised within three main research groups.
