Dan Walker kicks off the official opening of the Villages in style
After many years of work and development, the Student Villages project was completed in September last year with the opening of The Ranmoor Village. We wanted to celebrate this fantastic achievement and thank everyone who was involved in the project for all their hard work, so we held an official opening on 26 May and invited everyone who had been involved to come and celebrate with us!
Dan Walker, BBC Football Focus presenter and University of Sheffield alumni, and Vice-Chancellor (VC) Keith Burnett joined us at the event which included a mini football tournament with students from the Villages and an exhibition showing the different stages in the development and comparing the new accommodation with the old!
Over 150 people attended the opening and enjoyed delicious afternoon tea refreshments and speeches from Dan and Keith. The VC spoke about the fantastic partnership and collaboration involved in the project and announced a new accommodation bursary for students who display sporting excellence.
Dan entertained guests with tales of his time in Earnshaw Hall. It seems teetotaller Dan managed to get into lots of mischief and confessed all to guests – including the warden at the time! Luckily our Security team were around to make sure he didn´t cause any more trouble!
It was a fantastic day and it was great to finally celebrate all the years of hard work. We´ve come a long way from the student halls of yesteryear and we´re really proud of our University accommodation.
