HMO Mandatory Licensing

Sheffield City Council operates Mandatory Licensing of all Houses in Multiple Occupation(HMO's) which have three or more stories and five or more occupiers, forming two or more households. The license will normally run for five years and will contain specific information including the maximum number of occupants that the HMO may have. It may also include details of management requirements, standards of the property or requirements to carry out specific work.

Mandatory Licensing is a statutory requirement and those landlords who fail to apply for a license for a HMO which has three or more stories and five or more occupiers, forming two or more households, will be at risk of prosecution with fines up to £20,000.
