Virtual tours of University accommodation available now
The University of Sheffield has launched an innovative new interactive map on their website which enables prospective students to take virtual tours of University accommodation from the comfort of their own home.
Using 360˚ spins, information points and videos featuring residents sharing their experiences, the map enables students to work their way around the accommodation in The Endcliffe and Ranmoor Villages at the click of a mouse. It´s been designed to add a new dimension to the experience of choosing where to live by providing students with the opportunity to view the different property types, room types, catering options, locations and lifestyles on offer.
Head of Accommodation and Commercial Services (ACS), Pat McGrath said, "We´re always looking at ways of improving the student experience using the feedback they give us and we´re really excited about this new development to our website. We know that not all students are able to come and look at the accommodation in person before applying, including many overseas students, so the interactive map should help them feel as informed as possible."

Free accommodation for Sheffield sports star

The recently launched Elite Sports Performance Scheme (ESPS), set up by the University of Sheffield to support aspiring sports stars has now chosen the lucky winner of the Accommodation Scholarship.
Hollie Webb, 20, a first-year Economics and Social Policy student, who plays hockey for England and Great Britain in the under 21 category, was awarded the highest level of the ESPS. In addition to receiving access to sporting facilities and academic support, Hollie was also awarded a year´s free accommodation at The Endcliffe Village, courtesy of Catalyst Higher Education (Sheffield) Plc and a £50 per week eatwithUS card from the department of Accommodation and Commercial Services (ACS).
The scholarship was presented to Hollie by world champion heptathlete, Sheffield resident and University of Sheffield alumnus Jessica Ennis who launched the ESPS. Hollie actually chose to come to Sheffield after being impressed with The Endcliffe Village - she thought it seemed like a lovely place to live and is delighted to have won the opportunity to live there rent free!
The Accommodation Scholarship will be running for three years, offering two more students the chance to live and eat for free in University accommodation. Students wanting to come to Sheffield in 2011 and 2012 are welcome to apply.

Exciting opportunity for the University´s future sports stars

Aspiring sports stars studying at the University of Sheffield can apply for a newly introduced scholarship to live rent free in University accommodation.
Catalyst Higher Education PLC and Accommodation and Commercial Services are offering students who show sporting excellence the opportunity to apply for the scholarship which gives one elite sportsperson the chance to live in a contemporary apartment in The Student Villages for a year and receive a £40 weekly eatwithUS card to spend on food and drink.
With the London 2012 Olympics just around the corner and Sheffield´s growing reputation as a centre of sporting excellence, the University has set up the Elite Sport Performance Scheme with alumna heptathlete Jessica Ennis as its patron. The Scheme aims to nurture Britain´s future sports stars and provide them with the support they need to excel in both their academic and sporting careers.
The opportunity to live rent free for a year is just one of the advantages of being involved in the Scheme. Other benefits include free S10 gym membership and academic flexibility, enabling students to take part in sporting fixtures without affecting their studies.
To be accepted onto the Elite Sport Performance Scheme and have the chance to win the accommodation scholarship, students will need to have competed for their country – England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales – or for Great Britain and provide a supporting statement from their coach. The closing date to apply is Wednesday 6 October 2010.

BBC's Dan Walker kicks off the official opening of the Villages in style
After many years of work and development, the Student Villages project was completed in September last year with the opening of The Ranmoor Village. We wanted to celebrate this fantastic achievement and thank everyone who was involved in the project for all their hard work, so we held an official opening on 26 May and invited everyone who had been involved to come and celebrate with us!
Dan Walker, BBC Football Focus presenter and University of Sheffield alumni, and Vice-Chancellor (VC) Keith Burnett came along to the event which included a mini football tournament with students from the Villages and an exhibition showing the different stages in the development and comparing the new accommodation with the old!
Over 150 people attended the opening, including representatives from the Community Development Committees (CDCs) and enjoyed delicious afternoon tea refreshments and speeches from Dan and Keith. The VC spoke about the fantastic partnership and collaboration involved in the project and announced a new accommodation bursary for students who display sporting excellence.
Dan entertained guests with tales of his time in Earnshaw Hall. It seems teetotaller Dan managed to get into lots of mischief and confessed all to guests – including the warden at the time! Luckily our Security team were around to make sure he didn´t cause any more trouble!
It was a fantastic day and it was great to finally celebrate all the years of hard work. We´ve come a long way from the student halls of yesteryear and we´re really proud of our University accommodation – we hope you are too!
The ultimate in student accommodation
The Ranmoor Village is our newest accommodation and is home to around 1,000 students living together in a mix of brand new apartments and studios, all of which are en-suite.
Since it opened in 2009, it´s gained a reputation for having a real sense of community. Residents love living there! In fact, the Village achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 84% voted for by current residents in our recent Accommodation Survey. If you´re looking for a relaxed and friendly place to live, then Ranmoor is the place for you.
A diverse range of students live in The Ranmoor Village including undergraduates, postgraduates and International students. It´s particularly suitable for those looking to focus on their studies whilst still enjoying a wide range of activities, including many with a non-alcohol related focus.

At the heart of the Village is The Ridge, where you´ll find a launderette, social spaces and The Ridge Bar. The popular bar serves a range of great value food and is the perfect place to catch up with friends over a coffee or a game of pool.

There´s always plenty going on at Ranmoor with a packed programme of activities and events designed to help students settle in, meet new people and make the most of student life. This year, Ranmoor residents enjoyed yoga, streetdance, film nights, craft classes, Mahjong and many more activities, as well as regular quiz nights and bar events. There´s also the chance to get involved with many Students´ Union clubs and societies, such as the International Society.
It´s only around 1.5 miles from campus and the city so most students choose to walk the 10-15 minute pleasant, safe trip to lectures. It´s also on an excellent bus route with buses running every few minutes. The popular student areas of Broomhill and Ecclesall Road, with their shops, cafés, bars and supermarkets are close by too, including an Asian supermarket.
