Graduate employment
91.4% of full-time first degree graduates who completed their courses in 2008/9 had entered employment or further study at a point six months after graduation. Of those entering employment 68.5% were in graduate level jobs.
The University of Sheffield Careers Service develops and maintains extensive links with employers at local, national and international levels. Our graduates move into a range of occupational areas in all sectors of the economy and all parts of the UK and overseas. Because our students are much sought after, we are targeted by many of the UK's major organisations for their graduate recruitment needs.
By far the single largest employer of University of Sheffield graduates is the National Health Service but significant numbers also join organisations such as Sheffield City Council, PwC, KPMG, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Rolls-Royce, Tesco, Teach First, Atkins, Mott MacDonald, the Army, The British Council and government departments and local government.
In addition this University is also a significant recruiter of its own graduates. Our graduates also find employment in less well-known and smaller organisations offering interesting and challenging opportunities, often in specialist roles eg IT, public relations, urban planning etc.
The Careers Service offers extensive facilities to both students and employers. Students in all years of study have access to facilities and activities which assist them in the acquisition of job-seeking and employability skills including:
- a comprehensive programme of talks , workshops and schemes eg the Sheffield Graduate Award
- one of the country’s largest programmes of employer information events which include our popular and well-regarded recruitment fairs as well as employer presentations, one-to-one sessions and skills sessions
- a team of experienced and knowledgeable careers advisers
- a comprehensive website which incorporates an online vacancy service
- a Student Jobshop which helps students find internships, part-time, temporary and vacation work.
